Head of Marketing & Communications

Working closely with the Senior Management Team and the Board of Trustees, the postholder will be responsible for developing and delivering all aspects of In Kind Direct’s marketing and communications strategy. Our website and on-line catalogue are core to our work, and the right candidate will need to have extensive digital marketing/ e-commerce experience.

REPORTING TO: Chief Executive

CONTRACT: Permanent, full-time 35 hrs/week (candidates interested in working 3 or 4 days/ week will also be considered)

LOCATION: City, London

  • Create, implement and continually develop the marketing strategy, the operational marketing plan and the external communications strategy (including social media)
  • Monitor internal and external use of branding guidelines – ensuring consistency in the look and message of all materials, events and campaigns – protecting In Kind Direct’s brand, corporate identity and positioning
  • Manage the content and design of the external website, as well as the promotional content in the on-line catalogue
  • Drive traffic to the website and the on-line catalogue through search engine optimisation and other marketing tools
  • Gain an understanding of the unique challenges of charity e-commerce, then use your expertise to improve ‘customer’ experience driving repeat ‘purchases’ and generating additional basket spend, liaising with the Catalogue Production team with regards to pricing, incentives and promotions
  • Ensure all marketing materials – print and on-line – are up-to-date, relevant and effective
  • Work closely with the Senior Management Team to provide strategic advice and materials (textual and visual) to support their functions
  • Generate leads and heightened awareness with key donor targets through work with trade press, trade associations and industry networks
  • Support  international marketing expansion
  • Monitor, measure and maximise return on investment of all marketing initiatives
  • Draft the annual report, annual review and one-off publications, managing design/printing
  • Ensure In Kind Direct is positioned appropriately with potential funders, media and opinion formers in the charity world and government
  • Devise and implement PR campaigns, providing a fast and appropriate response to media enquiries (in conjunction with Clarence House) and proactively raise awareness and understanding of In Kind Direct’s work
  • Compose and place supportive news and influential features in relevant media integrating case studies into communications materials
  • Build strong working relationships with suppliers and agencies
  • Work closely with the Marketing Committee, including organising meetings, preparing papers and taking minutes
  • Maintain awareness of current circumstances and trends relating to in-kind giving

Person specification

  • Commercial marketing, communications and PR experience, with deep understanding of outbound digital marketing and search marketing/ optimisation
  • Extensive email marketing experience
  • Ability to work on own initiative, bringing innovative and creative ideas to the organisation
  • KPI/ROI oriented person, capable of concretely measuring effectiveness of marketing
  • Ability to demonstrate self-confidence, professionalism and gravitas (the postholder will work directly with the Marketing Committee Trustees and Clarence House)
  • Ability to build strong working relationships inside and outside the organisation
  • Superb oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organisational skills with ability to prioritise tasks, work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • High attention to detail
  • University degree or equivalent experience
